Troy Rounseville is a sculpture major and he was showing his work this week. It was cool and interesting I like how it actually played. The piece was called BODY3. He connected all the music instruments you see above and they were playing music. Unfortunately, i forgot to write down what gallery he was in. His piece was very cool. You could see all the time and effort he put in on it. He is a very talented artist. He will definitely be very successful. It was fun admiring his artwork.
This week in class I met Jose Santillan he is a first year at CSULB. He is from the Los Angles area. He went Bell High School. He commutes to CSULB that shows his dedication to get his education. In high school Jose played soccer, track and field, and cross country. He is an undeclared major. He sketches in his free time. He works on campus in the design major.
My favorite piece I saw on Thursday was created by Jeff Dulla. It was called “cyclical nature” it was oil patels on a 96″ x 5.5″ canvas. Unfortunately, he was not there. If he was there I would have asked him “What is your inspiration?” Also, “Is this your imagination or how you see reality?”. Lastly ” How long did this piece take you?”
I met Dominic Erich in class on Thursday today. He is a freshman here at CSULB. He is an accounting major, however he said he might change to finance. He is not to sure what he wants to do, I understand how he feels because I was the same way my freshman year. He played tennis and water polo in high school. He went to school near Stockton He dorms at CSULB and also he is in the honors program. He plays guitar and wants to get into surfing. He has no art background similarly to me however he said he painted his friends wall a litttle and his friends parents said it was okay.
My 3 favorite activities of the semester were the plaster casting, French Girls, and the spray painting names in bubble letters. I liked these activities because they were because they were very easy and fun to do.
My 3 least favorite activities were the alternate identity, the kick starter, and those were honestly the only ones I did not enjoy. The reason I did not like them were because the alternate identity one is asking a person to step way too far out of their comfort zone, and for me personally I just did not feel comfortable doing that. That is why I did not participate in that activity. For the kick starter one, I am not really that creative of a person so that was really hard for me to think of something interesting.
Overall, this class is exactly what a GE should look like. It should not be a difficult class with a test you need to study for and waste time on when you’re taking classes for your major – the ones you are actually interested in and want to study for. This class was really fun because it had me doing stuff I never thought of doing. It helped me create my own website, which is a really good idea.
The only thing that I personally think could make this class better, would be maybe considering taking away the alternate identity and kick starter activities, and substitute it with something a little more simpler for us to do. I definitely had a great semester in Art 110.
Timothy Cooper’s artwork titled, “Something That Means Something” was my favorite artwork that we saw this week. The piece has 145 hand thrown plates. They were all produced from early September to mid October. He said he wants this project “to bare witness to the ability to multiple individuals to work together to produce a positive personal, social, and aesthetic experience.” Cooper wants it to be known that the most important material involved in art is not the art materials he uses, such as paints, ceramics, pencils, and papers; it is the “community, time, and personal desire to resolve the inequalities of relationships.” I think Timothy did a really good job with this piece, and it was really cool walking into the room where the only thing lit up were the plates.
This week in class I talked to Oscar Ramirez and coincidentally we have the same last name. Oscar is a 3rd year, however he is a 1st year at CSULB. He transferred from Santa Barbara Community College, and he is from Santa Barbara. He commutes to school every day. Oscar is majoring in Electrical Engineering and he says after he gets his degree, he wants to get a Master’s degree. His first 2 years of high school he played soccer, and the last 2 he played football. Similarly to me, he has no art background besides the classes he had to take in high school as graduation requirements. He has a job, while being at CSULB he tutors math with a company that gives him clients.
This week I had control of what I wanted to do for my activity for Art110, so I chose to do Microsoft Paint. I like to go on Paint on my free time. For the one with my name, I zoomed in, and got the biggest size spray can. I randomly colored the background in many different colors, and then I got the medium sized black spray can and sprayed my name alongside an exclamation point. For the LB State one I colored the whole background black, got the medium sized yellow spray can and sprayed “LB.” To finish it off, I got the small sized yellow spray can and sprayed “State” at the bottom. This was a very good week in Art110; I liked Glenn’s idea of letting us choose our own thing, giving us some variety in life.
This week in class I got to look at Romina’s art works. Her gallery was called “Shifting Focus,” and all of the pieces are a series of portraits done from direct observation with a live model. Out of all of her portraits, which there were 8 of them, this one was my favorite. I really like the shading that is done with this piece. His facial expression makes the tone of this very mysterious, almost telling you a story. This piece was called “The Portrait of Victor.” It was done with charcoal and pastel on a 38×50 inch canvas, and it was done in 2014. Romina limited her tools and attempted to explore the full potential of the charcoal and pastel. She did a really good job with this live model.
This week in class I met Alex. Alex is a 2nd year at CSULB and similarly to me, he is a Kinesiology major; however, his major is Exercise Science while mine is Physical Education. Alex and I had a lot of similarities. For instance, we both played football in high school, he has no art background besides the high school art requirements and he is a 2nd year at CSULB, like me. He went to high school in Rosemead, California which is about 40 minutes away. When I asked him if he commutes to school every day or dorms, he said he commutes. When I asked him where he lives I assumed he moved out of his parent’s house, he hadn’t. He commutes 40 minutes to school every day he has class (hats off to ya Alex.) Alex likes to go to the Rec in his free time. The reason I put this picture in this post is because this is where Alex and I were talking, but I forgot to take a picture with him.
